Benji is a 15 year old Corgi x Shih Tsu who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.
Settled quickly; Fine to be left: It took Benji about a week to settle at his foster home and he is happy to be left alone for a few hours. He is a loving dog, though pretty quiet in the house.
Good with calm dogs; OK with cats: Benji is good with dogs, although he doesn’t like to be near bouncy or exuberant dogs. He is sharing his foster home with a cat, though he and the cat had to be monitored for the first few weeks. At times he tries to play with the cat. He seems mildly perplexed by cats in general.
Fine with children: Benji was used to having children visit his former home and he has interated with a few children whilst he’s been in foster care. He has coped well although he isn’t used to living with children so any children in his new home would need to be calm and about 8+ years old.
Lives for his walks: In foster care, Benji is enjoying two 2.5 mile off-lead, countryside walks per day. He is a very good dog, though he can’t hear very well and his sight isn’t perfect either, so you need to take care that he doesn’t follow the wrong people or take a different path as he can’t hear you calling! He is also good on the lead. Walking is probably the most important part of Benji’s day. He therefore needs an active person or family that will continue his lifelong routine of long and regular walks.
Excited in the car: Benji bounces around like a lunatic in the car!
Benji’s favourite pastimes: Walking is pretty much his be all and end all. He doesn’t play with toys. However he loves cinnamon honey treats. He doesn’t like plain kibble, but absolutely loves meat on his food (at which point, he will lick the bowl clean.) Also, he licks his bed a lot… and himself.
Benji’s perfect home: Benji needs a home with an active member of the family dedicated to taking him for long walks each day. He would like a compassionate, happy, active home.
Health notes: Benji is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. He takes glucosamine each day. When he came into our care his foster carer noticed that he was mildly arthritic at night; however, she changed his food to a high-quality, grain-free food with some organic meat on top and both his coat and his arthritis improved dramatically. Ideally, he would be kept on a high-quality food as it did improve his health.
Foster carer’s summary of Benji: He is one of the most easygoing dogs ever. I think he has a good few years left in him — everyone is shocked to learn he is fifteen. He acts much, much younger. He needs a family or person that will help keep him young and will also give him all the love he deserves. His previous owner passed away; on the back of her funeral program, there was a picture of Benji. He was immensely loved his whole life and needs to finish out his life with such love too!
